Longing for Savor

The exhibition Longing for Savor is dedicated to the relationship between smells, tastes, and the memories associated with them. The artists Kallirroi Ioannidou, Jana Jacob, and Renata Müller-Tiburtius consciously present works that represent specific scents or flavors and refer to personal, cultural, and emotional memories.

At the center of the exhibition is the question: which smells or tastes have the power to transport us back into the past, and why?

An exemplary work is Jana Jacob’s Blue Banana I, which establishes a strong connection to her Thai family history. The banana plant, which has always been present in her home, as well as the many banana varieties that grow in Thailand, function as symbols of longing. At the same time, they provoke reflections on the gaps and incompleteness within her familial origins.

Renata Müller-Tiburtius’s work Lemons That Sing Stories refers to her Croatian heritage. The lemon tree in her grandfather’s garden stands as a symbol of lost roots and of the bond—and fragile relationship—to one of her family lineages. Kallirroi Ioannidou’s View of a Cheese Sandwich relates to her Greek roots.

The exhibition is complemented by a food performance intended to evoke a sensory memory within the exhibition space itself. In this performance, molds of the artists’ noses, ears, and mouths are made and transformed into small ice sculptures, which are distributed to visitors during the exhibition.

Jana Jacob is a painter based in Berlin whose oil paintings explore intimate, often private moments of human existence. Her works oscillate between self-expression, latent exhibitionism, and voyeurism, examining the tension between vulnerability and the urge for self-expression. In the series “She Wore Blue Velvet,” Jana Jacob focuses on the “blue counterpart”—an object that appears in various forms: sometimes as sensual velvet, sometimes as a curtain, an air mattress, or an oversized banana. It is staged as an object of desire that plays on deep longings for closeness and security.

Kallirroi Ioannidou‘s artistic work deals with the fundamental forms of life, its fragility, its interconnectedness, and its transience. Her work opens up new perspectives on the relationship between body, space, materiality, and experience. A central element of her work is the exploration of absurdity and ambivalence, which reflect the complexity and contradictions of human existence. The artist uses drawing and painting as equal forms of expression and supplements them with three-dimensional objects made of glass, steel, or ceramics. In large, space-related arrangements, she interlinks fragments, forms, and narratives to raise questions about the body, existence, truth, change, and the role of the individual in our society. In doing so, her approach opens up new interpretations of the familiar by placing the seemingly everyday in unfamiliar contexts, thereby revealing the absurdity of life.

Renata Müller-Tiburtius‘s work explores a playful interplay between material, color, and association. By merging different media, she creates visual worlds that oscillate between absurdity and lightness, transforming the fleeting moments of everyday life into new, often surreal narratives. Whimsy, humor, and an idiosyncratic sensuality open up spaces that feel familiar and foreign at the same time. From 2013 to 2021, she studied sculpture at the Berlin University of the Arts in Karsten Konrad’s class and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
